Light might just be the greatest of healers. Among the oldest therapeutic techniques ever recorded, the ancient Egyptians used light therapy to disinfect and heal wounds, and it’s been an entire century since light was scientifically proven to cure disease. Only now cutting-edge technology has developed far enough that we can deliver it in a myriad of unprecedented powerful and precise forms.

The era of modern phototherapy
Human cells are particularly responsive to red light and it’s this connectivity that has borne the recent wave of infrared saunas, low-level lasers, LED chambers and at-home light devices.
”Red light therapy delivers energy to cells by applying a range of visible and invisible wavelengths of light. Red light easily penetrates skin, which makes it useful therapeutically for reaching cells and tissues deeper inside the body,” explains Dr Igor Micunovic, Energetic Doctor at the Chenot Espace Clinic at One&Only PortoNovi in Montenegro, where he uses red light therapy in its many forms to heal and rejuvenate.
Light exists as a full spectrum of colours and wavelengths and yet, humans are only capable of seeing wavelengths ranging between 400-700 nanometers, constituting only 0.0035% of the entire light spectrum. Red light itself is an umbrella term, and though a small section of it sits within the spectrum of visible light, (620 to 700 nanometers), there is an expansive range of red light termed as “infrared”, that’s entirely invisible to the naked eye. Near-infrared light penetrates more deeply into the body, meaning its healing energy can access and benefit cells that visible red light cannot.

A matter of mitochondria
A pivotal form of red light therapy being explored and invested in right now is Photobiomodulation (PBM), the technique of converting non-thermal light energy into chemical energy used by a cell. Within cells are tiny energy-producing power plants called mitochondria, which are the source of the energy for your cells and for your body as a whole. When mitochondria inside a cell have everything they need to produce energy efficiently, that cell is healthy and when the majority of your cells have everything the mitochondria within them need to produce energy efficiently, your body is healthy.
“Most health issues exist due to mitochondrial disorders,” says Dr Micunovic. “Red and near-infrared light penetrate deeply into body tissues, where they impart their healing effects by enhancing mitochondrial energy production. Red and near-infrared radiation is absorbed by an enzyme within the mitochondria of cells called cytochrome C oxidase. This results in enhanced cellular metabolism and a cascade of beneficial physiological effects including a positive increase in energy (ATP) production, cellular oxygenation, blood flow, and CO2 production, teamed with a welcome decrease in stress hormones, lactic acid, inflammation, and free radicals.”

Photobiomodulation as a high-tech healer
“The therapeutic process of Photobiomodulation, often also referred to as Low-level Light Therapy (LLLT), harnesses near-infrared red light to optimise cellular function, promote tissue repair, support the immune system and accelerate the body’s natural healing processes.
Cosmetically it enhances skin rejuvenation, reduces signs of aging, and improves conditions like acne and psoriasis. Photobiomodulation is also widely used as an effective treatment for fat reduction, smoking cessation, improving bone density, increasing testosterone, and preventing hair loss and hair regrowth. There’s ample evidence that it reduces inflammation in acute and chronic conditions, promoting faster healing; e.g. wound healing, by stimulating fibroblast migration and enhancing collagen production. It also relieves chronic pain conditions and supports faster muscle recovery time after strenuous exercises for injuries, as well as alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety,” attests Dr Micunovic.
In fact, so extraordinary is the application of Photobiomodulation, that exploratory trials demonstrate it supports neural regeneration and protects against various neurodegenerative diseases, pitching it as a cutting edge technology for treating cognitive decline and diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. A UK pilot study published in the journal Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found two sessions of transcranial photobiomodulation therapy (PBM-T) for six minutes a day showed improvements in the study participants’ motor function, brain processing speed, and memory.
Experience full body recharge
With pioneering health wellness retreats across the globe, the abundant capabilities of red light are at the heart of Chenot’s Recover & Energise programme; an ideal route to both healing and powering up the body at a cellular level. Personalised, bioenergetic signals transmitted through laser conductivity points on the body restore energetic balance, while stress, low mood and disturbed sleep are all improved during the week’s intensive exposure to the non-invasive stimulation of cellular rejuvenation processes.
From his Chenot Espace center in Montenegro, Dr Micunovic administers photobiomodulation therapy in the form of precision laser acupuncture; a modern adaptation of traditional acupuncture that uses low-level lasers instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points on the body. “Acupuncture laser therapy combines the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine with advanced technology, offering a non-invasive alternative to traditional acupuncture. Low-level laser uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate acupuncture points, promoting healing. It is non-invasive, and unlike needles, laser therapy is painless and suitable for those who are needle-averse or have sensitive skin.”
Sitting comfortably alongside hormesis and gut health interventions, next-gen red light therapy has earned its wellness stripes as a tenet of modern wellness at Chenot. We are light beings, and along with the rest of the natural world, our cells are stimulated by light. Light is fundamental to our cellular function and long-term wellbeing, and we should take every opportunity to bask in all its goodness.
