Is Functional Decline the Inevitable Result of Ageing?

The Chenot Method can reduce your biological age, but our aim isn’t just to help you live longer; it’s to help you live better for longer.

As life expectancy climbs across most of the world, the big question is: How do we keep doing the things that we love for as long as possible? At Chenot, we seek to “give meaning to time,” Dr. George Gaitanos, Chief Operating and Scientific Officer of Chenot Group. The goal is not just to tack years onto a person’s life, but to maintain peak cognitive and physical ability as they age. Our scientifically proven method helps reprogram the process of chronological aging, winding back each guest’s biological clock so that they can live healthier for decades to come.

Throughout most parts of the world, life expectancy is — and has been — steadily climbing over the past century. Several new studies now predict that humans might soon live up to, even beyond, 120 years old. But if your lifespan potentially stands to double, what do you want that second act to look like? Longevity means little if the goal is only to tack on years. At Chenot, we think about age in terms of quality, not just quantity, focusing on what Dr. George Gaitanos — Chief Operating and Scientific Officer of Chenot Group — calls “functional age”: “Your speed, your memory, your cognitive ability.” Our goal is not simply to help you accrue extra time, but to make that time worthwhile; to ensure that you can continue doing the things that matter to you for years to come.

In that way, you give meaning to time, and that’s what we want to achieve,” says Dr. George Gaitanos, Chief Operating and Scientific Officer of Chenot Group. “You make health contextual. You make health functional. Functionality is all about quality of life.

What does chronological age do to the body?

As we age, our bodies accumulate damage on both a macro- and microscopic level, eroding our resilience. That damage can also encourage disease, as cellular flaws repeat and multiply over time.

Chenot recognizes 12 hallmarks of ageing that affect not only the routine operations of our cells — from the integrity of our DNA to our cells’ ability to regulate protein production to their capacity to eliminate malfunctions — but also the way they interact and communicate with one another. Some cells that have reached the end of their life cycles don’t die but linger in the body, triggering inflammation in surrounding tissue that can, if it becomes chronic, prime the body for disease.

If the body is a machine, then “as time goes by, the battery becomes rusty,” Gaitanos explains. In order to restore peak performance, you have to clean out that corrosion, and you have to pipe energy back into the system. To do that, the Chenot Method zeroes in on two hallmarks of aging: Disabled macroautophagy and mitochondrial dysfunction.

How does the Chenot Method improve the ageing process?

The Chenot Method® kickstarts a deep clean of the body’s battery. The cornerstone is our fast-mimicking Chenot Diet®, designed to upregulate autophagy (or, the process through which our cells identify and recycle their faulty parts) by temporarily pausing their replication. Our chefs spread 850 calories over three daily meals, prioritizing nutrient-dense ingredients  — fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, and spices high in antioxidants — over the protein cells need to reproduce. Depriving them of that energy source dials down their rate of growth so that they can switch into cleaning mode.

At the same time, Chenot treatments aim to re-energise the body by improving mitochondrial fitness. The generators that power each of our cells, mitochondria use oxygen to make energy; temporarily restricting the amount of oxygen available to them — creating conditions of hypoxia — trains the mitochondria to do more with less. Whether through the use of an oxygen mask or via a workout session in our altitude chamber, we aim to induce therapeutic hypoxia: a sustainable degree of stress that improves metabolic efficiency within the cells. We also use photobiomodulation, or exposure to red and near-infrared light, to help repair damaged mitochondria and boost their energy production.

Cryotherapy — or controlled exposure to temperatures as low as -110 degrees Celsius — is another useful tool. In addition to helping rebalance circadian rhythms, potentially soothing chronic pain, and improving mental acuity, research suggests that cryotherapy may also strengthen mitochondrial performance. Exposure to cold can activate mitochondria-rich brown fat, which helps the body break down sugar and burn energy. Cold may also transform white fat, excess amounts of which drive obesity, into brown fat. Taken altogether, these treatments aim to make more and better mitochondria, which in turn means more energy flowing into a battery that’s better prepared to hold charge.

On top of which, each Chenot visit is bookended by in-depth medical consultations, during which our medical staff assesses the guest’s ageing progress. We determine the guest’s Vitality Score by measuring the strength of their vascular system, the level of heavy metals and oxidative stress in their organs, and the amount of collagen in their skin. At the same time, we use comprehensive mRNA analysis to get a picture of  each guest’s genetic profile. Our panel offers a bird’s-eye view of the genes associated with silent inflammation — or, low-grade, chronic, internal inflammation — oxidative stress, hormone activity, and overall aging, empowering guests to be proactive about their long-term health.

How does the Chenot Method® extend healthspan?

A week at Chenot provides a full-body reset, but the real change comes after the guest leaves. Each receives lifestyle recommendations tailored to their biology, helping them to adopt new daily habits that support their highest physical, mental, and emotional potential. “We fight for time, but how do we measure life?” Gaitanos asks. What matters to us is how our guest is able to enjoy that time. “Longevity is all about lifetime happiness and wellbeing,” he adds. You are not living life to avoid disease; you manage your disease. You’re managing your problem but you still experience a full, active life. That’s what health is all about.
